HCoV-NL63 is a species of coronavirusidentified in late 2004 in a 7-month-old child with bronchiolitis in Netherlands. This virus infection hasbeen confirmed worldwide, taking about 4.7% ofcommon respiratory illnesses.
Similar to HCoV-229E and HCoV-OC43, HCoV-NL63 causes mild infection, primarly foun in youngchildren, elderly and immunocompromised patients,more commonly in outpatients than hospitlizedpatients. The clinical symptoms commonly presentas fever hoarseness, bronchitis,,pneumonia andcroup.
Transmission of HCoV-NL63 is through droplet expulsion from the respiratory tract, the virus is able to survive for up to seven days in the secretions and remains infective at room temperature. Once the virus has entered the host it binds to cellular receptors using spike proteins and Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as an entry receptor to bind to and enter target cell.
