Biological Significance
Pregnancy-associated plasma protein A, pappalysin 1, also known as PAPPA, is a protein used in screening tests for Down syndrome and more recently as a cardiac marker. This gene encodes a secreted metalloproteinase which cleaves insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs). It is thought to be involved in local proliferative processes such as wound healing and bone remodeling. Low plasma level of this protein has been suggested as a biochemical marker for pregnancies with aneuploid fetuses (fetuses with an abnormal number of chromosomes). For example, low PAPPA may be seen in prenatal screening for Down syndrome.

NCBI Description

This gene encodes a secreted metalloproteinase which cleaves insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs). It is thought to be involved in local proliferative processes such as wound healing and bone remodeling. Low plasma level of this protein has been suggested as a biochemical marker for pregnancies with aneuploid fetuses. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

PAPPA: Metalloproteinase which specifically cleaves IGFBP-4 and IGFBP-5, resulting in release of bound IGF. Cleavage of IGFBP-4 is dramatically enhanced by the presence of IGF, whereas cleavage of IGFBP-5 is slightly inhibited by the presence of IGF. Belongs to the peptidase M43B family.

Protein type: Secreted, signal peptide; Protease; Secreted; EC 3.4.24.79

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 9q33.2

Cellular Component: membrane; extracellular region

Molecular Function: zinc ion binding; metallopeptidase activity; metalloendopeptidase activity

Biological Process: cellular protein metabolic process; female pregnancy; proteolysis; cell differentiation

Product Notes

The PAPPA pappa (Catalog #AAA5303551) is a Native Protein produced from Human and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "PAPPA, Native Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
