Mutations in this gene cause the X-linked Kallmann syndrome. The encoded protein is similar in sequence to proteins known to function in neural cell adhesion and axonal migration. In addition, this cell surface protein is N-glycosylated and may have anti-protease activity.

NCBI Description

Mutations in this gene cause the X-linked Kallmann syndrome. The encoded protein is similar in sequence to proteins known to function in neural cell adhesion and axonal migration. In addition, this cell surface protein is N-glycosylated and may have anti-protease activity. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

KAL1: Has a dual branch-promoting and guidance activity, which may play an important role in the patterning of mitral and tufted cell collaterals to the olfactory cortex. Chemoattractant for fetal olfactory epithelial cells. Defects in KAL1 are the cause of Kallmann syndrome type 1 (KAL1); also known as hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia. Anosmia or hyposmia is related to the absence or hypoplasia of the olfactory bulbs and tracts. Hypogonadism is due to deficiency in gonadotropin-releasing hormone and probably results from a failure of embryonic migration of gonadotropin- releasing hormone-synthesizing neurons. In some patients other developmental anomalies can be present, which include renal agenesis, cleft lip and/or palate, selective tooth agenesis, and bimanual synkinesis. In some cases anosmia may be absent or inconspicuous.

Protein type: Motility/polarity/chemotaxis; Extracellular matrix

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: Xp22.32

Cellular Component: proteinaceous extracellular matrix; extracellular space; plasma membrane

Molecular Function: heparin binding; serine-type endopeptidase inhibitor activity; protein binding; extracellular matrix structural constituent

Biological Process: axon guidance; chemotaxis; cell adhesion; cell motility

Disease: Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism 1 With Or Without Anosmia

Product Notes

The KAL1 kal1 (Catalog #AAA6137250) is an Antibody produced from Mouse and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The KAL1 (ADMLX, KAL, KALIG1, Anosmin-1, Adhesion Molecule-like X-linked, Kallmann Syndrome Protein) APC reacts with Human and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's KAL1 can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, ELISA (EIA), Western Blot (WB). Applications are based on unconjugated antibody. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the KAL1 kal1 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "KAL1, Monoclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
