Related Product Information for anti-DEFA5 antibody
Product Description: The monoclonal antibody 8C8 recognizes human alpha-defensin 5 (HD5). HD5 is an antimicrobial peptide produced by Paneth cells, specialized epithelial cells of the small intestinal crypt. HD5 is stored in the Paneth cells as propeptide (aa 20-94) and released as mature peptide after trypsin digestion, which is co-secreted from the Paneth cell granules. The mature HD5 (aa 63-94) is protected from further digestion by the proteolysis enzyme. HD5 functions in maintaining the correct microbial balance in the intestine. Transgenic mice that express HD5 are protected from lethal challenge caused by Salmonella typhimurium. Expression levels of HD5 are negatively correlated to intestinal infection. HD5 is a useful marker for intestinal metaplasia of the upper gastrointestinal tract. HD5 expression has also been detected in the upper half of the stratified squamous epithelium of the vagina and ectocervix with increasing intensity toward the lumen. Secreted HD5 is detectable in cervicovaginal lavages, with highest concentrations during the secretory phase of the menstrual cycle. The monoclonal antibody 8C8 was raised against recombinant HD5 (aa 20-94) and recognizes the propeptide and the partially processed forms (aa 36-94 and 56-94), but it hardly recognizes mature peptide. No cross reactivity with HD6, lysozyme, or sPLA2 could be detected.

NCBI Description

Defensins are a family of microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides thought to be involved in host defense. They are abundant in the granules of neutrophils and also found in the epithelia of mucosal surfaces such as those of the intestine, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and vagina. Members of the defensin family are highly similar in protein sequence and distinguished by a conserved cysteine motif. Several of the alpha defensin genes appear to be clustered on chromosome 8. The protein encoded by this gene, defensin, alpha 5, is highly expressed in the secretory granules of Paneth cells of the ileum. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

DEFA5: Has antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Defensins are thought to kill microbes by permeabilizing their plasma membrane. All DEFA5 peptides exert antimicrobial activities, but their potency is affected by peptide processing. Belongs to the alpha-defensin family.

Product Notes

The DEFA5 defa5 (Catalog #AAA584082) is an Antibody produced from Mouse and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The Defensin 5, Human, mAb 8C8 reacts with Human and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's Defensin 5 can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, F, Immunoasssay (IA), Western Blot. Application Use: For immunohistology and Western blotting, dilutions to be used depend on detection system applied. It is recommended that users test the reagent and determine their own optimal dilutions. The typical starting working dilution is 1:50. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the DEFA5 defa5 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Defensin 5, Monoclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
