Biological Significance
Betaine homocysteine methyltransferase (BHMT), is a cytosolic enzyme, its partial fragments were discovered as autolysosomal membrane proteins from rat liver in the presence of leupeptin. BHMT was also found in human liver. BHMT transfers a methyl group from betaine to homocysteine to form DMG (dimethylglycine) and Met. In vivo, liver BHMT expression is influenced by dietary changes in sulphur amino acids, choline and betaine.
Cross-Reactivity
Human
Immunogen
BHMT antibody was raised in mouse using a full length recombinant protein of human BHMT (NP_001704) produced in HEK293T cells, as the immunogen.
Preparation and Storage
Store at 4 degree C for short term storage. Aliquot and store at -20 degree C for long term storage. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles.

NCBI Description

This gene encodes a cytosolic enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of betaine and homocysteine to dimethylglycine and methionine, respectively. Defects in this gene could lead to hyperhomocyst(e)inemia, but such a defect has not yet been observed. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

BHMT: Involved in the regulation of homocysteine metabolism. Converts betaine and homocysteine to dimethylglycine and methionine, respectively. This reaction is also required for the irreversible oxidation of choline.

Protein type: Methyltransferase; Amino Acid Metabolism - cysteine and methionine; Amino Acid Metabolism - glycine, serine and threonine; EC 2.1.1.5

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 5q14.1

Cellular Component: protein complex; cytoplasm; cytosol

Molecular Function: betaine-homocysteine S-methyltransferase activity; homocysteine S-methyltransferase activity; zinc ion binding; protein complex binding

Biological Process: S-methylmethionine cycle; protein amino acid methylation; betaine catabolic process; sulfur amino acid metabolic process; S-adenosylmethionine metabolic process; response to organic nitrogen; betaine metabolic process; regulation of homocysteine metabolic process

Product Notes

The BHMT bhmt (Catalog #AAA830433) is an Antibody produced from Mouse and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. AAA Biotech's BHMT can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Immunohistochemistry (IHC), Western Blot (WB). IHC: 1:50 WB: 1:1000. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the BHMT bhmt for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "BHMT, Monoclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
