Related Product Information for anti-ACTH antibody
ACTH (same as Corticotropin) is a 39 amino acid active peptide produced by the anterior pituitary. This mAb is specific to CLIP (aa 25-39 of ACTH); does not react with Synacthen (aa1-24 of ACTH). POMC (pro-opiomelanocortin or corticotropin-lipotropin) is a 267 amino acid polypeptide hormone precursor that goes through extensive, tissue-specific posttranslational processing by convertases. POMC is cleaved into ten hormone chains named NPP, ACTH, alpha-MSH (Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone), beta-MSH, gamma-MSH, CLIP (corticotropin-like intermediary peptide), Lipotropin-beta, Lipotropin-gamma, beta-endorphin and Met-enkephalin. ACTH is also produced by cells of immune system (T-cells, B-cells, and macrophages) in response to stimuli associated with stress. Anti-ACTH is a useful marker in classification of pituitary tumors and the study of pituitary disease. It reacts with ACTH-producing cells (corticotrophs). It also may react with other tumors (e.g. some small cell carcinomas of the lung) causing paraneoplastic syndromes by secreting ACTH.

NCBI Description

This gene encodes a polypeptide hormone precursor that undergoes extensive, tissue-specific, post-translational processing via cleavage by subtilisin-like enzymes known as prohormone convertases. There are eight potential cleavage sites within the polypeptide precursor and, depending on tissue type and the available convertases, processing may yield as many as ten biologically active peptides involved in diverse cellular functions. The encoded protein is synthesized mainly in corticotroph cells of the anterior pituitary where four cleavage sites are used; adrenocorticotrophin, essential for normal steroidogenesis and the maintenance of normal adrenal weight, and lipotropin beta are the major end products. In other tissues, including the hypothalamus, placenta, and epithelium, all cleavage sites may be used, giving rise to peptides with roles in pain and energy homeostasis, melanocyte stimulation, and immune modulation. These include several distinct melanotropins, lipotropins, and endorphins that are contained within the adrenocorticotrophin and beta-lipotropin peptides. The antimicrobial melanotropin alpha peptide exhibits antibacterial and antifungal activity. Mutations in this gene have been associated with early onset obesity, adrenal insufficiency, and red hair pigmentation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been described. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2014]

Uniprot Description

POMC: ACTH stimulates the adrenal glands to release cortisol. Defects in POMC may be associated with susceptibility to obesity (OBESITY). It is a condition characterized by an increase of body weight beyond the limitation of skeletal and physical requirements, as the result of excessive accumulation of body fat. Defects in POMC are the cause of pro-opiomelanocortinin deficiency (POMCD). Affected individuals present early-onset obesity, adrenal insufficiency and red hair. Belongs to the POMC family.

Product Notes

The ACTH pomc (Catalog #AAA847291) is an Antibody produced from Mouse and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The Anti-ACTH Antibody (r57) reacts with Human, Mouse, Rat and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's ACTH can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, ELISA (EIA), Flow Cytometry (FC/FACS), Immunocytochemistry (ICC), Immunofluorescence (IF), Immunohistochemistry (IHC). FC/FACS: 0.5-1ug/1x106 cells IF: 0.5-1ug/ml IHC (Formalin-fixed): 0.5-1ug/ml. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the ACTH pomc for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "ACTH, Monoclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
