Background: Machupo virus (MACV) is a member of the NW complex of arenaviruses and is the causative agent of Bolivian hemorrhagic fever (HF). Human infections generally result from exposure to chronically infected rodents (Calomys callosus), but human-to-human spread has been reported11. Bolivian HF is a febrile illness often associated with vascular leakage and occasional concomitant neurological manifestations. Infection can result in a systemic inflammatory response syndrome leading to multiple organ failure and death.
