GCN5L2 has been shown to interact with Ku70, TAF9, transcription initiation protein SPT3 homolog, TADA2L, Ku80 and DDB1. Recombinant human GCN5L2 protein, fused to His-tag at N-terminus, was expressed in E Coli and purified by using conventional chromatography techniques.

KAT2A, or GCN5, is a histone acetyltransferase (HAT) that functions primarily as a transcriptional activator. It also functions as a repressor of NF-kappa-B (see MIM 164011) by promoting ubiquitination of the NF-kappa-B subunit RELA (MIM 164014) in a HAT-independent manner (Mao et al., 2009 [PubMed 19339690]).[supplied by OMIM, Sep 2009]

Has significant histone acetyltransferase activity with core histones, but not with nucleosome core particles. Also acetylates non-histone proteins, such as CEBPB (PubMed:17301242). Component of the ATAC complex, a complex with histone acetyltransferase activity on histones H3 and H4. In case of HIV-1 infection, it is recruited by the viral protein Tat. Regulates Tat's transactivating activity and may help inducing chromatin remodeling of proviral genes.
