Biological Significance
Oncostatin M (OSM) is a growth and differentiation factor that participates in the regulation of neurogenesis, osteogenesis and hematopoiesis. Produced by activated T cells, monocytes and Kaposi's sarcoma cells, OSH can exert both stimulatory and inhibitory effects on cell proliferation. It stimulates the proliferation of fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells and Kaposi's sarcoma cells, but, inhibits the growth of some normal and tumor cell lines. It also promotes cytokine release (e.g. IL6, GM-CSF and G-CSF) from endothelial cells, and enhances the expression of low-density lipoprotein receptor in hepatoma cells.
Bioactivity
The ED50 was determined by the dose-dependent stimulation of the proliferation of human TF-1 cells is approximately 2.0 ng/ml, corresponding to a specific activity of approximately 5 x 10^5 units/mg.
Endotoxin Levels
Endotoxin level is less than 0.1 ng per ug (1 EU/ug).
Expression System
E Coli
Preparation and Storage
Store at 4 degree C until reconstitution. Following reconstitution aliquot and freeze at -20 degree C for long term storage. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles.

NCBI Description

Oncostatin M is a member of a cytokine family that includes leukemia-inhibitory factor, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, and interleukin 6. This gene encodes a growth regulator which inhibits the proliferation of a number of tumor cell lines. It regulates cytokine production, including IL-6, G-CSF and GM-CSF from endothelial cells. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

OSM: Growth regulator. Inhibits the proliferation of a number of tumor cell lines. Stimulates proliferation of AIDS-KS cells. It regulates cytokine production, including IL-6, G-CSF and GM-CSF from endothelial cells. Uses both type I OSM receptor (heterodimers composed of LIPR and IL6ST) and type II OSM receptor (heterodimers composed of OSMR and IL6ST). Involved in the maturation of fetal hepatocytes, thereby promoting liver development and regeneration. Belongs to the LIF/OSM family.

Product Notes

The OSM osm (Catalog #AAA539546) is an Active Protein produced from Human and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. AAA Biotech's Oncostatin M can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, User optimized. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the OSM osm for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. The amino acid sequence is listed below: Region of Oncostatin M protein correspond ing to amino acids MAAIGSCSKE YRVLLGQLQK QTDLMQDTSR LLDPYIRIQG LDVPKLREHC RERPGAFPSE ETLRGLGRRG FLQTLNATLG CVLHRLADLE QRLPKAQDLE RSGLNIEDLE KLQMARPNIL GLRNNIYCMA QLLDNSDTAE PTKAGRGASQ PPTPTPASDA FQRKLEGCRF LHGYHRFMHS VGRVFSKWGE SPNRSRRHSP HQALRKGVRR. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Oncostatin M, Active Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
