Related Product Information for VEGF120 active protein
Rat Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor120 (VEGF120), a 14.1 kDa protein consisting of 120 amino acid residues, is produced as a homodimer. VEGF120 is a polypeptide growth factor and a member of the platelet-derived growth factor family. It is a specific mitogen for vascular endothelial cells and a strong angiogenic factor in vivo. Two high-affinity tyrosine kinase receptors for VEGF120 have been identified, VEGFR-1 (FLT-1), and VEGFR-2 (Flk-1). Consistent with the endothelial cell-specific action of VEGF120, expression of both receptor genes has been found predominantly but not exclusively on endothelial cells. Expression of VEGFR-1 was also found on human monocytes, neutrophils (PMNs), bovine brain pericytes and villous and extravillous trophoblasts. In addition to its action as a mitogen it is a potent vascular permeability factor (VPF) in vivo and is also a chemo attractant for monocytes and endothelial cells. At least four different proteins are generated by differential splicing of the mouse VEGF gene: VEGF120, VEGF144, VEGF164 and VEGF188. The most abundant form is VEGF164. Whereas VEGF120, VEGF144 and VEGF164 are secreted proteins, VEGF188 is strongly cell-associated. In addition, the isoforms VEGF164 and VEGF188 bind to heparin with high affinity. All dimeric forms possess similar biological activities. A related protein of VEGF is placenta growth factor (PlGF) with about 53% homology and VEGF-B with similar biological activities. The full ORF of native rat VEGF120 (Ala27-Arg146) was cloned from total RNA of rat sinusoidal endothelial cells using standard protocols.

NCBI Description

This gene product is a member of the PDGF/VEGF growth factor family. It is a mitogen that specifically acts on endothelial cells and has various effects, including mediating increased vascular permeability, inducing angiogenesis, vasculogenesis, endothelial cell growth, promoting cell migration, and inhibiting apoptosis. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. Also, alternative translation initiation from non-AUG (CUG) and AUG start sites in some transcript variants, give rise to additional isoforms. The expression of some isoforms derived from AUG start codon is affected by a small upstream open reading frame, which is located within an internal ribosome entry site. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2013]

Uniprot Description

Function: Growth factor active in angiogenesis, vasculogenesis and endothelial cell growth. Induces endothelial cell proliferation, promotes cell migration, inhibits apoptosis and induces permeabilization of blood vessels. Binds to the FLT1/VEGFR1 and KDR/VEGFR2 receptors, heparan sulfate and heparin. May play a role in increasing vascular permeability during lactation, when increased transport of molecules from the blood is required for efficient milk protein synthesis. Ref.5

Subunit structure: Homodimer; disulfide-linked. Also found as heterodimer with PGF. Ref.4

Subcellular location: Secreted

By similarity. Note: VEGF-A120 is acidic and freely secreted. VEGF-A164 is more basic, has heparin-binding properties and, although a signicant proportion remains cell-associated, most is freely secreted. VEGF-A188 is very basic, it is cell-associated after secretion and is bound avidly by heparin and the extracellular matrix, although it may be released as a soluble form by heparin, heparinase or plasmin

By similarity.

Tissue specificity: Expressed in the pituitary, in brain, in particularly in supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei and the choroid plexus. Also found abundantly in the corpus luteum of the ovary and in kidney glomeruli. Expressed in the ductal epithelial cells of post-pubertal mammary glands. Expressed in the ductal and alveolar epithelial cells throughout the whole period of gestational evolution, lactation and involution. Ref.5

Developmental stage: Increases during pregnancy (5.0-fold increase on day 12 with a subsequent decrease on day 18) and during lactation (18.5-fold increase on day 7). Levels appear to be minimally altered during involution. Ref.5

Sequence similarities: Belongs to the PDGF/VEGF growth factor family.

Product Notes

The VEGF120 vegfa (Catalog #AAA691677) is an Active Protein produced from E Coli and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The Rat VEGF120 reacts with Rat and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. The amino acid sequence is listed below: N-Terminal Sequence: APTTEGEQKA H. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "VEGF120, Active Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
