Related Product Information for CD6 recombinant protein
Background: T cell differentiation antigen CD6 is a cell adhesion molecule expressed on immature thymocytes and mature T cells, and has also been detected on a subset of B cells and NK cells within the immune system. CD6 mediates cell-cell interactions through it's binding partner CD166/ALCAM, and contributes to the formation and maturation of the immunological synapse. CD6 functions as a co-stimulatory receptor, promoting T cell activation and proliferation through the TCR/CD3 complex signaling cascade. Studies have shown CD6 can be glycosylated, hyperphosphorylated on serine and threonine residues, and phosphorylated on tyrosine residues, each of which can differentially effect the function and signaling of this molecule. CD6 also functions as a calcium-dependent pattern receptor that binds and aggregates Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In response to lipopolysaccharide, CD6 mediates activation of the inflammatory response and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

NCBI Description

This gene encodes a protein found on the outer membrane of T-lymphocytes as well as some other immune cells. The encoded protein contains three scavenger receptor cysteine-rich (SRCR) domains and a binding site for an activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule. The gene product is important for continuation of T cell activation. This gene may be associated with susceptibility to multiple sclerosis (PMID: 19525953, 21849685). Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2011]

Uniprot Description

CD6: a type I membrane protein involved in cell adhesion. Binds to CD166. Expressed on thymocytes, peripheral T cells, a subset of B cells, and a subset of neurons. Mediates the binding of developing thymocytes with thymic epithelial cells. CD6- T cells are less autoreactive than CD6+ T cells. Phosphorylated on tyrosines and serines following T cell antigen receptor signaling. Five splice-variant isoforms have been described.

Protein type: Membrane protein, integral; Cell surface

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 11q13

Cellular Component: integral to plasma membrane

Molecular Function: protein binding; scavenger receptor activity

Biological Process: receptor-mediated endocytosis; cell adhesion

It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "CD6, Recombinant Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
