Miscellaneous: This virus has been isolated from a patient with fulminant hepatitis. A genomic mutation in 1898 creates a stop codon at position 28 of HBeAg, without affecting the capsid open reading frame. The HBeAg negative variants of HBV are associated with fulminant hepatitis, but can also be found in patients with persistent infection and chronic hepatitis.
