Related Product Information for COL2A1 protein
Collagen is an inert, rigid protein found predominantly in skin, ligaments, bones and teeth. Its most distinctive attribute, essential to a transmitter of mechanical force, is inelasticity. Its fundamental structural unit is tropo-collagen, a molecular rod about 2600Å in length and 15Å in diameter and 300,000 molecular weight. In tendons these macromolecules, grouped as collagen fibrils, run parallel to the axis. In skin the fibrils are interlaced and branched.

FITC-labeled bovine type II is an excellent substrate for examining collagenase activity. This labeled substrate is highly purified and telo-peptide free and is supplied lyophilized or in solution. To minimize background levels in collagenase assays, FITC-labeled collagen has been enzymatically pre-treated and further purified by ion-exchange chromatography.
FITC-labeled collagen can also be used as a substrate for cell culture. Collagen degradation products in the culture supernatants can be directly determined by measured the flourescence at 520nm (Emission)/490 nm (Excitation).

NCBI Description

This gene encodes the alpha-1 chain of type II collagen, a fibrillar collagen found in cartilage and the vitreous humor of the eye. Mutations in this gene are associated with achondrogenesis, chondrodysplasia, early onset familial osteoarthritis, SED congenita, Langer-Saldino achondrogenesis, Kniest dysplasia, Stickler syndrome type I, and spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia Strudwick type. In addition, defects in processing chondrocalcin, a calcium binding protein that is the C-propeptide of this collagen molecule, are also associated with chondrodysplasia. There are two transcripts identified for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

COL2A1: the alpha-1 chain of type II collagen, an extra-cellular matrix protein found in cartilage and the vitreous humor of the eye. It is essential for the normal embryonic development of the skeleton, for linear growth and for the ability of cartilage to resist compressive forces. Chondrocalcin is the calcium binding C-propeptide of this collagen molecule. Defects in this protein are associated with achondrogenesis, chondrodysplasia, early onset familial osteoarthritis, SED congenita, Langer-Saldino achondrogenesis, Kniest dysplasia, Stickler syndrome type I, and spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia Strudwick type. There are two transcripts identified for this gene. Belongs to the fibrillar collagen family. 3 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Product Notes

The COL2A1 col2a1 (Catalog #AAA635085) is a Protein produced from Bovine articular cartilage and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. AAA Biotech's Collagen Type II, Bovine can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, ELISA (EL/EIA). Suitable for use in assaying mammalian collagenase activity. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the COL2A1 col2a1 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Collagen Type II, Bovine, Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
