Principle of the Assay: This assay employs a two-site sandwich ELISA to quantitate BNP in samples. An antibody specific for BNP has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and anyBNP present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for BNP is added to the wells. After washing, Streptavidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of BNP bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

This gene is a member of the natriuretic peptide family and encodes a secreted protein which functions as a cardiac hormone. The protein undergoes two cleavage events, one within the cell and a second after secretion into the blood. The protein's biological actions include natriuresis, diuresis, vasorelaxation, inhibition of renin and aldosterone secretion, and a key role in cardiovascular homeostasis. A high concentration of this protein in the bloodstream is indicative of heart failure. The protein also acts as an antimicrobial peptide with antibacterial and antifungal activity.
