ubiquitin-like-conjugating enzyme ATG10, also known as ATG10, is a 220 amino acid protein that localizes to the cytoplasm and plays a role in autophagy, specifically functioning as an E2-like enzyme that provides Atg recognition sites during autophagosome synthesis. ATG10 has also been shown to interact with ATG12 in human embryonic kidney cells in the presence of ATG7. Deletion of the p arm of chromosome 5 leads to Cri du chat syndrome, while deletion of the q arm or of chromosome 5 altogether is common in therapy-related acute myelogenous leukemias and myelodysplastic syndrome. Recombinant human ATG10 protein, fused to His-tag at N-terminus, was expressed in E Coli and purified by using conventional chromatography techniques.

ATG10 is an E2-like enzyme involved in 2 ubiquitin-like modifications essential for autophagosome formation: ATG12 (MIM 609608)-ATG5 (MIM 604261) conjugation and modification of a soluble form of MAP-LC3 (MAP1LC3A; MIM 601242), a homolog of yeast Apg8, to a membrane-bound form (Nemoto et al., 2003 [PubMed 12890687]).[supplied by OMIM, Mar 2008]
