NCBI and Uniprot Product Information
NCBI Description
Megakaryocytopoiesis is the cellular development process that leads to platelet production. The protein encoded by this gene is a humoral growth factor that is necessary for megakaryocyte proliferation and maturation, as well as for thrombopoiesis. This protein is the ligand for MLP/C_MPL, the product of myeloproliferative leukemia virus oncogene. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants of this gene.
Uniprot Description
Function: Lineage-specific cytokine affecting the proliferation and maturation of megakaryocytes from their committed progenitor cells. It acts at a late stage of megakaryocyte development. It may be the major physiological regulator of circulating platelets.
Subcellular location: Secreted.
Domain: Two-domain structure with an erythropoietin-like N-terminal and a Ser/Pro/Thr-rich C-terminal.
Involvement in disease: Defects in THPO are a cause of essential thrombocythemia (ET) [
MIM:187950]. ET is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait which is characterized by elevated platelet levels due to sustained proliferation of megakaryocytes, and frequently lead to thrombotic and haemorrhagic complications. Ref.10
Sequence similarities: Belongs to the EPO/TPO family.

Product Notes
The THPO thpo (Catalog #AAA650462) is an Active Protein and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Thrombopoietin, Active Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.Precautions
