• Biological Significance: IL1a is a non-secreted proinflammatory cytokine produced in a variety of cells including monocytes, tissue macrophages, keratinocytes and other epithelial cells. Both IL1a and IL1beta binds to the same receptor and has similar if not identical biological properties. These cytokines have a broad range of activities including, stimulation of thymocyte proliferation, by inducing IL2 release, B-cell maturation and proliferation, mitogenic FGFlike activity and the ability to stimulate the release of prostaglandin and collagenase from synovial cells. However, whereas IL1beta is a secreted cytokine, IL1a is predominantly a cell-associated cytokine.
• Bioactivity: The ED50 as determined by the dose-dependent stimulation of Mouse D10S cells is 5 x 10^8 units/mg.

NCBI Description

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the interleukin 1 cytokine family. This cytokine is a pleiotropic cytokine involved in various immune responses, inflammatory processes, and hematopoiesis. This cytokine is produced by monocytes and macrophages as a proprotein, which is proteolytically processed and released in response to cell injury, and thus induces apoptosis. This gene and eight other interleukin 1 family genes form a cytokine gene cluster on chromosome 2. It has been suggested that the polymorphism of these genes is associated with rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer's disease. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
