This assay employs a two-site sandwich ELISA to quantitate GAL in samples. An antibody specific for GAL has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and any GAL present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for GAL is added to the wells. After washing, Streptavidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of GAL bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.

NCBI Description

This gene encodes a neuroendocrine peptide that is widely expressed in the central and peripheral nervous systems and also the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, adrenal gland and urogenital tract. The encoded protein is a precursor that is proteolytically processed to generate two mature peptides: galanin and galanin message-associated peptide (GMAP). Galanin has diverse physiological functions including nociception, feeding and energy homeostasis, osmotic regulation and water balance.
