NCBI Description

This gene encodes one of six different actin proteins. Actins are highly conserved proteins that are involved in cell motility, structure, integrity, and intercellular signaling. The encoded protein is a smooth muscle actin that is involved in vascular contractility and blood pressure homeostasis. Mutations in this gene cause a variety of vascular diseases, such as thoracic aortic disease, coronary artery disease, stroke, and Moyamoya disease, as well as multisystemic smooth muscle dysfunction syndrome. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2017]

Uniprot Description

ACTA2: Actins are highly conserved proteins that are involved in various types of cell motility and are ubiquitously expressed in all eukaryotic cells. Polymerization of globular actin (G-actin) leads to a structural filament (F-actin) in the form of a two-stranded helix. Each actin can bind to 4 others. Up-regulated in response to enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection. Belongs to the actin family.

Protein type: Contractile; Cytoskeletal; Motility/polarity/chemotaxis

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 10q23.31

Cellular Component: actin cytoskeleton; cytoplasm; cytosol; extracellular space; filopodium; lamellipodium; protein complex; smooth muscle contractile fiber

Molecular Function: ATP binding; protein kinase binding

Biological Process: muscle contraction; regulation of blood pressure; response to virus; vascular smooth muscle contraction

Disease: Aortic Aneurysm, Familial Thoracic 6; Moyamoya Disease 5; Multisystemic Smooth Muscle Dysfunction Syndrome

Product Notes

The alpha-SMA acta2 (Catalog #AAA2549217) is an Antibody produced from Rabbit and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The alpha-SMA Polyclonal Antibody reacts with Human, Mouse, Rat and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's alpha-SMA can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Western Blot (WB), Immunohistochemistry (IHC) Paraffin, Immunofluorescence (IF), ELISA (EIA). WB: 1:500-2000 IHC: 1:50-300 IF: 1:50-1:200 ELISA: 1:10000-20000. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the alpha-SMA acta2 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "alpha-SMA, Polyclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
