Encodes a ribosomal RPL21M protein that is localized to the mitochondrion and is involved in karyogamy during female gametophyte development and fertilization. Mutants display defects in both male and female gametophyte development (i.e.collapsed pollen and female gametophytes with unfused central cells).

This protein binds to 23S ribosomal RNA in the presence of protein L20 (). Required for karyogamy during female gametophyte development, when the two polar nuclei fuse to form the diploid central cell nucleus, and during double fertilization of the egg cell and the central cell (PubMed:16698901).
