Principles of the Assay: This kit is an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The plate has been pre-coated with Rat Ep-CAM antibody. Ep-CAM present in the sample is added and binds to antibodies coated on the wells. And then biotinylated Rat Ep-CAM Antibody is added and binds to Ep-CAM in the sample. Then Streptavidin-HRP is added and binds to the Biotinylated Ep-CAM antibody. After incubation unbound Streptavidin-HRP is washed away during a washing step. Substrate solution is then added and color develops in proportion to the amount of Rat Ep-CAM. The reaction is terminated by addition of acidic stop solution and absorbance is measured at 450 nm.

This gene encodes a carcinoma-associated antigen and is a member of a family that includes at least two type I membrane proteins. This antigen is expressed on most normal epithelial cells and gastrointestinal carcinomas and functions as a homotypic calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule. The antigen is being used as a target for immunotherapy treatment of human carcinomas. Mutations in this gene result in congenital tufting enteropathy. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2008]
