The human transmembrane 4 superfamily member 4 (TM4SF4, also known as il-TMP) was originally identified in intestine and liver as a cell proliferation-related gene. TM4SF4 contains 4 hydrophobic transmembrane domains and a hydrophilic region between domains 3 and 4 that contains 2 potential N-linked glycosylation sites. TM4SF4 is a human tetraspanin that is expressed in human intestine and liver. Other members of this family, TM4SF1 (also known as L6-Ag) and TM4SF5, are upregulated in multiple tumors and involved in epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and cell migration.
