NCBI Description

This gene is a member of the iron/manganese superoxide dismutase family. It encodes a mitochondrial protein that forms a homotetramer and binds one manganese ion per subunit. This protein binds to the superoxide byproducts of oxidative phosphorylation and converts them to hydrogen peroxide and diatomic oxygen. Mutations in this gene have been associated with idiopathic cardiomyopathy (IDC), premature aging, sporadic motor neuron disease, and cancer. Alternate transcriptional splice variants, encoding different isoforms, have been characterized. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

SOD2: Destroys superoxide anion radicals which are normally produced within the cells and which are toxic to biological systems. Genetic variation in SOD2 is associated with susceptibility to microvascular complications of diabetes type 6 (MVCD6). These are pathological conditions that develop in numerous tissues and organs as a consequence of diabetes mellitus. They include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy leading to end-stage renal disease, and diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic retinopathy remains the major cause of new- onset blindness among diabetic adults. It is characterized by vascular permeability and increased tissue ischemia and angiogenesis. Belongs to the iron/manganese superoxide dismutase family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Product Notes

The SOD sod2 (Catalog #AAA6501640) is an Antibody produced from Rabbit and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The Superoxide Dismutase, Mn (SOD) (HRP) reacts with Human, Mouse, Rat, Bovine and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's Superoxide Dismutase, Mn can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Immunohistochemistry (IHC) Paraffin, Western Blot (WB). IHC-P: 10ug/ml. Detected MnSOD in paraffin embedded rat brain tissue sections. Applications are based on unconjugated antibody. WB: 0.5-2ug/ml. Detects MnSOD in RIPA lysates of rat L6 RIPA cells. L6 cell lysates were resolved by electrophoresis and transferred to nitrocellulose probed with. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the SOD sod2 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Superoxide Dismutase, Mn, Polyclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
