RRP36 (Ribosomal RNA Processing 36, also known as C6orf153 and dJ20C7.4) is located on human chromosome 6p21.1. RRP36 functions at an early stage in the processing of 35S preribosomal RNA into the mature 18S species. The RRP36 protein is ubiquitously expressed in appendix, lymph node and other tissues. The deduced 259-amino acid protein contains a nuclear localization signal and shares 21% amino acid identity with yeast Rrp36. RRP36 is a component of the 90S pre-ribosome involved in the maturation of rRNAs. RRP36 is required for early cleavages of the pre-RNAs in the 40S ribosomal subunit maturation pathway (By similarity).
