The function of the delta-opioid receptors has not been determined. However, recent studies in rodents have linked delta-opioid receptor antagonists with prevention of morphine tolerance and dependence without relinquishing mu-opioid antinociception. In general, opioids modulate numerous central and peripheral processes, including pain perception, neuroendocrine secretion and the immune response.
