Nitric oxide signals diverse responses in animals and plants. NOA1 is a circularly permuted GTPase that is important for chloroplast function and is implicated in nitric oxide synthesis. NOA1 is an evolutionary conserved, nuclear encoded GTPase essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis, oxidative phosphorylation and ATP production. The function of NOA1 for assembly of mitochondrial ribosomes and regulation of OXPHOS activity depends on its GTPase activity. NOA1 is required for basal mitochondrial functions as adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis and apoptosis.
