The ING1 (inhibitor of growth) tumor suppressor protein shares a number of biological functions that are very similar with p53. The human ING1 gene contains three exons and two introns. There are four alternative splice variants produced from three different promoter regions (p33 ING1, p24 ING1, p27 ING1, p47 ING1). A number of studies have concluded that ING1 can influence a number of biological functions, which might be dependent on the variant that is expressed. This gene encodes a tumor suppressor protein that can induce cell growth arrest and apoptosis. The encoded protein is a nuclear protein that physically interacts with the tumor suppressor protein TP53 and is a component of the p53 signaling pathway. Reduced expression and rearrangement of this gene have been detected in various cancers. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported.
