NCBI and Uniprot Product Information
NCBI Description
This gene encodes a protein that phosphorylates carbohydrates such as ribulose, ribitol, and L-arabinitol. Genome-wide association studies in some populations have found an association between polymorphisms in this gene and sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, but studies of other populations have not been able to replicate this association. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, May 2013]
Uniprot Description
FGGY: Defects in FGGY are associated with sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting upper and lower motor neurons and resulting in fatal paralysis. Sensory abnormalities are absent. Death usually occurs within 2 to 5 years. The etiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is likely to be multifactorial, involving both genetic and environmental factors. Belongs to the FGGY kinase family. 4 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.
