Biological Significance
Zika virus spreads to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito, but it can also be sexually transmitted. Zika virus was first discovered in 1947 and is named after the Zika Forest in Uganda. In 1952, the first human cases of Zika were detected and since then, outbreaks of Zika have been reported in tropical Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. ZIKV has a single positive sense RNA genome, which is initially translated as a single polyprotein which is then cleaved post-translationally into three structural proteins (C, PrM or M, and E) and seven nonstructural (NS) proteins. The E (envelope) protein composes the majority of the virion surface and is involved with aspects of replication such as host cell binding and membrane fusion.
Implications in Disease
Zika causes a non life threatening virus, unless transmitted from a pregnant mother to her fetus where severe birth defects result. Symptoms of Zika are a fever, rash, conjunctivitis and headaches. There is no cure or treatment.

NS1 is post translationally glycosylated allowing it to form homodimers and associate with lipids.
