Entrez Summary: This gene is a member of the Ig superfamily and encodes a cell surface sialoglycoprotein expressed by cytokine-activated endothelium. This type I membrane protein mediates leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion and signal transduction, and may play a role in the development of artherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Two alternatively spliced transcripts encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene.Tissue specificity: Expressed on inflamed vascular endothelium, as well as on macrophage-like and dendritic cell types in both normal and inflamed tissue.INVITROGEN: CD106 is expressed on bone marrow stromal cells, myeloid cells, and endothelial cells.

NCBI Description

This gene is a member of the Ig superfamily and encodes a cell surface sialoglycoprotein expressed by cytokine-activated endothelium. This type I membrane protein mediates leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion and signal transduction, and may play a role in the development of artherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Three alternatively spliced transcripts encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2010]

Uniprot Description

VCAM1: Important in cell-cell recognition. Appears to function in leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion. Interacts with the beta-1 integrin VLA4 on leukocytes, and mediates both adhesion and signal transduction. The VCAM1/VLA4 interaction may play a pathophysiologic role both in immune responses and in leukocyte emigration to sites of inflammation. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: Cell adhesion; Membrane protein, integral; Motility/polarity/chemotaxis

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 1p21.2

Cellular Component: apical part of cell; cell surface; early endosome; endoplasmic reticulum; external side of plasma membrane; extracellular space; filopodium; Golgi apparatus; microvillus; plasma membrane; podosome

Molecular Function: amine oxidase activity; cell adhesion molecule binding; integrin binding

Biological Process: amine metabolic process; B cell differentiation; cell adhesion; cell-matrix adhesion; extracellular matrix organization and biogenesis; heterophilic cell adhesion; leukocyte adhesion; leukocyte tethering or rolling; membrane to membrane docking; positive regulation of T cell proliferation; regulation of immune response

Product Notes

The VCAM1 vcam1 (Catalog #AAA476015) is an Antibody produced from Mouse and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The Anti-VCAM1 Mouse mAb reacts with Human and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's VCAM1 can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Western Blot (WB), Immunohistochemistry (IHC). Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the VCAM1 vcam1 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "VCAM1, Monoclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
