Biological Significance
Collagen is a group of naturally occurring proteins. In nature, it is found exclusively in animals, especially in the flesh and connective tissues of mammals. Type-II collagen is the basis for articular cartilage and hyaline cartilage. It makes up 50% of all protein in cartilage and 85-90% of collagen of articular cartilage. Type II collagen does form fibers. This fibrillar network of collagen allows cartilage to entrap the proteoglycan aggregate as well as provide tensile strength to the tissue.
Cross-Reactivity
Chicken, cow, human, mouse, rat
Biohazard Information
This product contains sodium azide as preservative. Although the amount of sodium azide is very small appropriate care must be taken when handling.
Immunogen
Collagen type II antibody was raised in mouse using purified preparation of lathritic type II collagen from embryonic chicken sternum as the immunogen.
Preparation and Storage
Store at 4 degree C.

NCBI Description

This gene encodes the alpha-1 chain of type II collagen, a fibrillar collagen found in cartilage and the vitreous humor of the eye. Mutations in this gene are associated with achondrogenesis, chondrodysplasia, early onset familial osteoarthritis, SED congenita, Langer-Saldino achondrogenesis, Kniest dysplasia, Stickler syndrome type I, and spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia Strudwick type. In addition, defects in processing chondrocalcin, a calcium binding protein that is the C-propeptide of this collagen molecule, are also associated with chondrodysplasia. There are two transcripts identified for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

COL2A1: the alpha-1 chain of type II collagen, an extra-cellular matrix protein found in cartilage and the vitreous humor of the eye. It is essential for the normal embryonic development of the skeleton, for linear growth and for the ability of cartilage to resist compressive forces. Chondrocalcin is the calcium binding C-propeptide of this collagen molecule. Defects in this protein are associated with achondrogenesis, chondrodysplasia, early onset familial osteoarthritis, SED congenita, Langer-Saldino achondrogenesis, Kniest dysplasia, Stickler syndrome type I, and spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia Strudwick type. There are two transcripts identified for this gene. Belongs to the fibrillar collagen family. 3 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Product Notes

The COL2A1 col2a1 (Catalog #AAA531212) is an Antibody produced from Mouse and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The Collagen Type II antibody reacts with Chicken, Cow, Human, Mouse, Rat and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's Collagen Type II can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Flow Cytometry (FC/FACS), Immunofluorescence (IF), Immunohistochemistry (IHC) Formalin/Paraffin, Western Blot (WB). IHC-F: 1-2 ug/ml IHC-P: 1-2 ug/ml WB: 1-2 ug/ml. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the COL2A1 col2a1 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Collagen Type II, Monoclonal Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
