• Biological Significance: Creatine kinase consists of two subunits, which can be either B (brain type) or M (muscle type). Therefore, three different cytosolic isoenzymes exist: CK-MM, CK-BB and CK-MB. Cytosolic CK isoenzymes are always co-expressed in a tissue-specific fashion together with a mitochondrial isoform. Skeletal muscle expresses CK-MM (98%) and low levels of CK-MB (1%). The heart muscle expresses CK-MM at 70% and CK-MB at 25-30%. CKBB is expressed in all tissues at low levels. Cytosolic CKs, in close conjunction with Ca2+-pumps, play a crucial role for the energetics of Ca2+-homeostasis.

NCBI Description

The protein encoded by this gene is a cytoplasmic enzyme involved in energy homeostasis. The encoded protein reversibly catalyzes the transfer of phosphate between ATP and various phosphogens such as creatine phosphate. It acts as a homodimer in brain as well as in other tissues, and as a heterodimer with a similar muscle isozyme in heart. The encoded protein is a member of the ATP:guanido phosphotransferase protein family. A pseudogene of this gene has been characterized. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
