Immunofluorescence (IF) ( Immunofluorescence staining of fixed HeLa cells with anti-Basigin antibody Ab-1 (Ab00524) Immunofluorescence analysis of paraformaldehyde fixed HeLa cells on Shi-fix™ coverslips, permeabilized with 0.15% Triton and stained with the chimeric mouse IgG1 version of Ab-1 (Ab00524-1.1) at 10 µg/ml for 1h followed by Alexa Fluor® 488 secondary antibody (2 µg/ml), showing membrane staining. The nuclear stain is DAPI (blue). Panels show from left-right, top-bottom Ab00524-1.1, DAPI, merged channels and an isotype control. The isotype control was stained with an unknown specificity antibody (Ab00178-1.1) followed by Alexa Fluor® 488 secondary antibody.)

The antibody binds specifically to basigin, a protein of the immunoglobulin superfamily which is expressed on the surface of erythrocyte and acts as a receptor for the human malaria parasite P. falciparum. The recombinant chimeric monoclonal antibody Ab-1 acts by blocking the interaction between basigin and PfRH5, a ligand necessary for the P. falciparum erythrocyte invasion, thereby inhibiting the development of malaria.

NCBI Description

The protein encoded by this gene is a plasma membrane protein that is important in spermatogenesis, embryo implantation, neural network formation, and tumor progression. The encoded protein is also a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

Plays an important role in targeting the monocarboxylate transporters SLC16A1, SLC16A3, SLC16A8, SLC16A11 and SLC16A12 to the plasma membrane (PubMed:21778275). Plays pivotal roles in spermatogenesis, embryo implantation, neural network formation and tumor progression. Stimulates adjacent fibroblasts to produce matrix metalloproteinases (MMPS). Seems to be a receptor for oligomannosidic glycans. In vitro, promotes outgrowth of astrocytic processes.

Product Notes

The BSG bsg (Catalog #AAA488328) is a Recombinant Antibody and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The Anti-Basigin [Ab-1] reacts with Human and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. AAA Biotech's Basigin can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, ELISA (EIA), Blocking (BL). Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the BSG bsg for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Basigin, Monoclonal Recombinant Antibody" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
