Catalyzes the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of maltose to maltose 1-phosphate. Only maltose acts effectively as phosphoryl-group acceptor, but maltotriose, maltotetraose, maltopentaose, and maltohexaose show a weak potential to replace maltose. ATP is not replaceable as phosphoryl-group donor.
