Agent Description
Agent Gram-negative pleomorphic cells, spherical to ovoid shaped, single tripled-layered membrane but lacking true cell wall. Causes lower respriratory infections; less often a pharyngitis progressing to bronchitis or pneumoniae; gradual onset with headache, malaise, paroxysmal cough, substernal pain; leukocytosis in some cases. Duration varies from a few days to a month or more. Low fatality.
Preparation
Mycoplasma organisms are harvested by centrifugation, washed in PBS and extracted using ether. Residual ether is removed from the aqueous phase by bubbling with nitrogen gas. Resulting antigen preparation contains soluble Mycoplasma components in PBS.

Ships on dry ice. Aliquots to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -70°C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Aliquots are stable for at least 12 months.
