Upon reconstitution, this cytokine can be stored in working aliquots at 2 degree - 8 degree C for one month, or at -20 degree C for six months, with a carrier protein without detectable loss of activity.

Different isoforms of IL-18BP have been demonstrated, four in human and two in the murine system, and biological activity is limited to particular isoforms.IL-18 binding protein (IL-18BP) is a constitutively expressed and secreted protein that resembles the extracellular domains of Ig-like receptors but has no transmembrane form.Because IL-18 is one of the early signals leading to IFN-gamma production by T- helper (Th) type-1 cells, blocking IL-18 activity by IL-18BP may be involved in down-modulation of the early phases of immune responses.

The protein encoded by this gene functions as an inhibitor of the proinflammatory cytokine, IL18. It binds IL18, prevents the binding of IL18 to its receptor, and thus inhibits IL18-induced IFN-gamma production, resulting in reduced T-helper type 1 immune responses. This protein is constitutively expressed and secreted in mononuclear cells. Elevated level of this protein is detected in the intestinal tissues of patients with Crohn's disease. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2011]
