Recombinant human IL-13 protein with molecular weight 12 kDa.
Interleukin 13 (IL-13) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the IL13 gene which maps to 5q23-q31. It is cytokine secreted by many cell types, but especially T helper type 2 (Th2) cells, that is a mediator of allergic inflammation and disease. IL-13 is associated primarily with the induction of airway disease, it also has anti-inflammatory properties. IL-13 induces many features of allergic lung disease, including airway hyperresponsiveness, goblet cell metaplasia and mucus hypersecretion, which all contribute to airway obstruction. It also induces secretion of chemokines that are required for recruitment of allergic effector cells to the lung.

NCBI Description

This gene encodes an immunoregulatory cytokine produced primarily by activated Th2 cells. This cytokine is involved in several stages of B-cell maturation and differentiation. It up-regulates CD23 and MHC class II expression, and promotes IgE isotype switching of B cells. This cytokine down-regulates macrophage activity, thereby inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. This cytokine is found to be critical to the pathogenesis of allergen-induced asthma but operates through mechanisms independent of IgE and eosinophils. This gene, IL3, IL5, IL4, and CSF2 form a cytokine gene cluster on chromosome 5q, with this gene particularly close to IL4. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

Function: Cytokine. Inhibits inflammatory cytokine production. Synergizes with IL2 in regulating interferon-gamma synthesis. May be critical in regulating inflammatory and immune responses.

Subunit structure: Interacts with IL13RA2.

Subcellular location: Secreted.

Involvement in disease: Allergic rhinitis (ALRH) [MIM:607154]: A common disease with complex inheritance characterized by mucosal inflammation caused by allergen exposure.Note: Disease susceptibility is associated with variations affecting the gene represented in this entry.

Sequence similarities: Belongs to the IL-4/IL-13 family.

Caution: It is uncertain whether Met-1 or Met-15 is the initiator.

Product Notes

The IL-13 il13 (Catalog #AAA355617) is a Recombinant Protein produced from E Coli and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. AAA Biotech's IL-13 can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, SDS-PAGE. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the IL-13 il13 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "IL-13, Recombinant Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
