Intended Uses: This sandwich kit is for the accurate quantitative detection of human Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (also known as GFAP) in serum, plasma, cell culture supernates, cell lysates, tissue homogenates.

Principles of the Assay: `This kit is an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The plate has been pre-coated with human GFAP antibody. GFAP present in the sample is added and binds to antibodies coated on the wells. And then biotinylated human GFAP Antibody is added and binds to GFAP in the sample. Then Streptavidin-HRP is added and binds to the Biotinylated GFAP antibody. After incubation unbound Streptavidin-HRP is washed away during a washing step. Substrate solution is then added and color develops in proportion to the amount of human GFAP. The reaction is terminated by addition of acidic stop solution and absorbance is measured at 450 nm.

This gene encodes one of the major intermediate filament proteins of mature astrocytes. It is used as a marker to distinguish astrocytes from other glial cells during development. Mutations in this gene cause Alexander disease, a rare disorder of astrocytes in the central nervous system. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
