NCBI Description

This gene is a member of the cytidine deaminase gene family. It is one of seven related genes or pseudogenes found in a cluster thought to result from gene duplication, on chromosome 22. Members of the cluster encode proteins that are structurally and functionally related to the C to U RNA-editing cytidine deaminase APOBEC1. It is thought that the proteins may be RNA editing enzymes and have roles in growth or cell cycle control. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

Function: DNA deaminase (cytidine deaminase) which acts as an inhibitor of retrovirus replication and retrotransposon mobility via deaminase-dependent and -independent mechanisms. After the penetration of retroviral nucleocapsids into target cells of infection and the initiation of reverse transcription, it can induce the conversion of cytosine to uracil in the minus-sense single-strand viral DNA, leading to G-to-A hypermutations in the subsequent plus-strand viral DNA. The resultant detrimental levels of mutations in the proviral genome, along with a deamination-independent mechanism that works prior to the proviral integration, together exert efficient antiretroviral effects in infected target cells. Selectively targets single-stranded DNA and does not deaminate double-stranded DNA or single-or double-stranded RNA. Exhibits antiviral activity against simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), herpes simplex virus 1 (HHV-1) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and may inhibit the mobility of LTR and non-LTR retrotransposons. May also play a role in the epigenetic regulation of gene expression through the process of active DNA demethylation. Ref.8 Ref.9 Ref.10 Ref.14 Ref.16 Ref.17

Catalytic activity: Cytidine + H2O = uridine + NH3.

Cofactor: Zinc

By similarity.

Subunit structure: Homodimer. Interacts with human foamy virus protein Bet; this interaction does not induce APOBEC3C degradation, but prevents dimerization and incorporation into virion of the latter. Interacts with TRIB3 and EIF2C2/AGO2. Ref.13 Ref.21 Ref.22

Subcellular location: Nucleus. Cytoplasm Ref.18 Ref.21.

Tissue specificity: Expressed in spleen, testes, peripherical blood lymphocytes, heart, thymus, prostate and ovary. Ref.7 Ref.15

Induction: Up-regulated by IFN-alpha.

Miscellaneous: It is one of seven related genes or pseudogenes found in a cluster, thought to result from gene duplication, on chromosome 22.

Sequence similarities: Belongs to the cytidine and deoxycytidylate deaminase family.Contains 1 CMP/dCMP deaminase zinc-binding domain.

Sequence caution: The sequence AAF86650.1 differs from that shown. Reason: Frameshift at position 172.

Product Notes

The APOBEC3C apobec3c (Catalog #AAA425131) is a Blocking Peptide and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The APOBEC3C (C-term) Immunizing Peptide reacts with Human and may cross-react with other species as described in the data sheet. The amino acid sequence is listed below: C-KNLWEAND RNET. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "APOBEC3C (C-term), Blocking Peptide" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
