Biological Significance
Artemin is a disulfide-linked homodimeric neurotrophic factor structurally related to GDNF, Artemin, Neurturin and Persephin. These proteins belong to the cysteine-knot superfamily of growth factors that assume stable dimeric protein structures. Artemin, GDNF, Persephin and Neurturin all signal through a multicomponent receptor system, composed of RET (receptor tyrosine kinase) and one of the four GFRalpha (alpha1-alpha4) receptors. Artemin prefers the receptor GFRalpha3-RET, but will use other receptors as an alternative. Artemin supports the survival of all peripheral ganglia such as sympathetic, neural crest and placodally derived sensory neurons, and dompaminergic midbrain neurons.
Bioactivity
Determined by it's ability to promote survival and neurite outgrowth and dorsal root ganglion neurons.
Endotoxin Levels
Endotoxin level is less than 0.1 ng per ug (1 EU/ug).
Expression System
E Coli
Preparation and Storage
Store at 4 degree C until reconstitution. Following reconstitution aliquot and freeze at -20 degree C for long term storage. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles.

NCBI Description

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the glial cell line-derived neurotophic factor (GDNF) family of ligands which are a group of ligands within the TGF-beta superfamily of signaling molecules. GDNFs are unique in having neurotrophic properties and have potential use for gene therapy in neurodegenerative disease. Artemin has been shown in culture to support the survival of a number of peripheral neuron populations and at least one population of dopaminergic CNS neurons. Its role in the PNS and CNS is further substantiated by its expression pattern in the proximity of these neurons. This protein is a ligand for the RET receptor and uses GFR-alpha 3 as a coreceptor. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2008]

Uniprot Description

artemin: Ligand for the GFR-alpha-3-RET receptor complex but can also activate the GFR-alpha-1-RET receptor complex. Supports the survival of sensory and sympathetic peripheral neurons in culture and also supports the survival of dopaminergic neurons of the ventral mid-brain. Strong attractant of gut hematopoietic cells thus promoting the formation Peyer's patch-like structures, a major component of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue. Belongs to the TGF-beta family. GDNF subfamily. 3 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Product Notes

The ARTN artn (Catalog #AAA539358) is an Active Protein produced from Human and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. AAA Biotech's Artemin can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, User optimized. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the ARTN artn for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. The amino acid sequence is listed below: Region of Artemin protein correspond ing to amino acids AGGPGSRARA AGARGCRLRS QLVPVRALGL GHRSDELVRF RFCSGSCRRA RSPHDLSLAS LLGAGALRPP PGSRPVSQPC CRPTRYEAVS FMDVNSTWRT VDRLSATACG CLG. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Artemin, Active Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
