Ampicillin belongs to the beta-lactam antibiotic family and it irreversibly inhibits transpeptidase to prevent cell wall synthesis in bacteria. Ampicillin has broad spectrum activity against most gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and is often used for treating bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections and meningitis.
