When infection with EBV occurs during adolescence or young adulthood, it causes infectious mononucleosis 35% to 50% of the time. In humans, EBV is also associated with cancer, in particular Burkitt's lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Hodgkin's disease, and immunoblastic lymphoma. p18 is detected in the virus producing cells. Antibody to VCA is found both early and late in EBV infection. At the time of infection, antibody of both the IgM and IgG types are detectable.
