It functions to dimethylate adjacent adenosines on the conserved hairpin loop of 18S rRNA in the 40S particle. DIMT1L is localized to the nucleolus. Recombinant human DIMT1 protein, fused to His-tag at N-terminus, was expressed in E Coli and purified by using conventional chromatography techniques.

The encoded protein is essential for ribosome biogenesis, although its catalytic activity is not involved in the process.
