Proteolytic digestion of pro-BNP results in formation of 76aa amino-terminal NT-proBNP and biologically active 32aa BNP hormone molecule. Both proBNP and NTproBNP circulate in human plasma and have been proposed as markers for early identification of left ventricular dysfunction as well as prognostic markers of possible cardiac complications at patients with heart failure.
