Scientific Background: Annexin 5 is a member of the annexin family of calcium-dependent phospholipid binding proteins. Annexin 5 is a phospholipase A2 and protein kinase C inhibitory protein with calcium channel activity and a potential role in cellular signal transduction, inflammation, growth and differentiation. In vitro studies have shown that Annexin 5 is a cellular protein which plays a role in the inhibition of blood coagulation by competing for phosphatidylserine binding sites with prothrombin (1). Through affinity assays Annexin 5 has been localized on cells that expressed phosphatidylserine on the cell surface, a feature found in apoptosis as well as other forms of cell death (2).

NCBI Description

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the annexin family of calcium-dependent phospholipid binding proteins some of which have been implicated in membrane-related events along exocytotic and endocytotic pathways. Annexin 5 is a phospholipase A2 and protein kinase C inhibitory protein with calcium channel activity and a potential role in cellular signal transduction, inflammation, growth and differentiation. Annexin 5 has also been described as placental anticoagulant protein I, vascular anticoagulant-alpha, endonexin II, lipocortin V, placental protein 4 and anchorin CII. The gene spans 29 kb containing 13 exons, and encodes a single transcript of approximately 1.6 kb and a protein product with a molecular weight of about 35 kDa. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

Function: This protein is an anticoagulant protein that acts as an indirect inhibitor of the thromboplastin-specific complex, which is involved in the blood coagulation cascade.

Subunit structure: Monomer. Binds ATRX and EIF5B

By similarity. Interacts with hepatitis B virus (HBV). Ref.16

Domain: A pair of annexin repeats may form one binding site for calcium and phospholipid.

Involvement in disease: Pregnancy loss, recurrent, 3 (RPRGL3) [MIM:614391]: A common complication of pregnancy, resulting in spontaneous abortion before the fetus has reached viability. The term includes all miscarriages from the time of conception until 24 weeks of gestation. Recurrent pregnancy loss is defined as 3 or more consecutive spontaneous abortions.Note: Disease susceptibility is associated with variations affecting the gene represented in this entry. Ref.21

Sequence similarities: Belongs to the annexin family.Contains 4 annexin repeats.

Product Notes

The ANXA5 anxa5 (Catalog #AAA515168) is a Recombinant Protein produced from E Coli and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The tag for this protein is His tag!!Expression System||E.coli!!Source Note||Recombinant full-length human Annexin 5 Protein was expressed by E. coli cells. AAA Biotech's Annexin 5 can be used in a range of immunoassay formats including, but not limited to, Western Blot (WB). Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the ANXA5 anxa5 for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Annexin 5, Recombinant Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
