The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the BTG/Tob family. This family has structurally related proteins that appear to have antiproliferative properties. This encoded protein might play a role in neurogenesis in the central nervous system. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq]

Function: Overexpression impairs serum-induced cell cycle progression from the G0/G1 to S phase.
Tissue specificity: Ubiquitous. High expression in the ventricular zone of the developing central nervous system. High in ovary, testis, prostate, thymus and lung. Ref.5
Developmental stage: Expression is cell cycle dependent with the highest levels at the end of G1 phase, peaking at the G1-S transition. Ref.5
Sequence similarities: Belongs to the BTG family.
