Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) interacting protein, also known as AIP, may play a positive role in AHR-mediated (aromatic hydrocarbon receptor) signaling, possibly by influencing its receptivity for ligand and/or its nuclear targeting. It is a Cellular negative regulator of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) X protein. Also, AIP is a ubiquitously expressed protein, binds to HSP 90 and AHR through a highly conserved carboxy-terminal tetraticopeptide repeat domain. Recombinant human AIP protein, fused to His-tag at N-terminus, was expressed in E Coli and purified by using conventional chromatography techniques.

The protein encoded by this gene is a receptor for aryl hydrocarbons and a ligand-activated transcription factor. The encoded protein is found in the cytoplasm as part of a multiprotein complex, but upon binding of ligand is transported to the nucleus. This protein can regulate the expression of many xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes. Also, the encoded protein can bind specifically to and inhibit the activity of hepatitis B virus. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2014]
