Related Product Information for AGRP / AgRP recombinant protein
Background: Agouti Related Protein (AGRP, or AGRT), is an endogenous antagonist of the melanocortin receptors MC3R and MC4R found in the hypothalamus and exhibits potent orexigenic activity. AGRP can act as a competitive antagonist to proopiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived peptides at the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R), and that this homeostatic mechanism is important as a means of coordinating appetite with perceived metabolic requirement. AGRP is upregulated by fasting while intracerebroventricular injections of synthetic AGRP lead to increased appetite and food intake. Thus, AGRP is a powerful orexigenic peptide that increases food intake when ubiquitously overexpressed or when administered centrally.

Description: A DNA sequence encoding the extracellular domain of mouse AGRP (P56473) (Met 1-Thr 131) was expressed, with a C-terminal polyhistidine tag.

NCBI Description

This gene encodes a protein that regulates feeding behavior and plays a key role in the control of body weight. The encoded protein acts as an antagonist of melanocortin receptor signaling. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2012]

Uniprot Description

AGRP: Plays a role in weight homeostasis. Involved in the control of feeding behavior through the central melanocortin system. Acts as alpha melanocyte-stimulating hormone antagonist by inhibiting cAMP production mediated by stimulation of melanocortin receptors within the hypothalamus and adrenal gland. Has very low activity with MC5R. Is an inverse agonist for MC3R and MC4R being able to suppress their constitutive activity. It promotes MC3R and MC4R endocytosis in an arrestin-dependent manner. Genetic variations in AGRP may be a cause of obesity (OBESITY). It is a condition characterized by an increase of body weight beyond the limitation of skeletal and physical requirements, as the result of excessive accumulation of body fat.

Product Notes

The AGRP / AgRP agrp (Catalog #AAA2547061) is a Recombinant Protein produced from Human Cells and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. The secreted recombinant mouse AGRP comprises 122 amino acids and has a calculated molecular mass of 13.7 kDa. The recombinant protein migrates as an approximately 20 kDa band in SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the AGRP / AgRP agrp for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "AGRP / AgRP, Recombinant Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
