Related Product Information for REN active protein
Renin is a aspartyl protease that plays a crucial role in the regulation of blood pressure and salt balance through the rennin-angiotensin system. It cleaves angiotensinogen to generate angiotensin I, which can be fur ther converted by angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) to angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is the active molecule of the rennin-angiotensin system that acts by binding to angiotensin receptors type 1 and 2 (AT-1 and AT-2), and has direct pathophysiological effects on the heart and peripheral vasculature. After secretion, inactive prorenin can be proteolytically activated by trypsin, cathepsin B, or other proteinases. Because of its unique specificity, i nhibition of Renin is widely studied to provide selective therapy for hypertension, congestive heart failure and associated disorders.

NCBI Description

Renin catalyzes the first step in the activation pathway of angiotensinogen--a cascade that can result in aldosterone release, vasoconstriction, and increase in blood pressure. Renin, an aspartyl protease, cleaves angiotensinogen to form angiotensin I, which is converted to angiotensin II by angiotensin I converting enzyme, an important regulator of blood pressure and electrolyte balance. Transcript variants that encode different protein isoforms and that arise from alternative splicing and the use of alternative promoters have been described, but their full-length nature has not been determined. Mutations in this gene have been shown to cause familial hyperproreninemia. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Uniprot Description

REN: Renin is a highly specific endopeptidase, whose only known function is to generate angiotensin I from angiotensinogen in the plasma, initiating a cascade of reactions that produce an elevation of blood pressure and increased sodium retention by the kidney. Interacts with ATP6AP2. Interaction with ATP6AP2 results in a 5-fold increased efficiency in angiotensinogen processing. Belongs to the peptidase A1 family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Product Notes

The REN ren (Catalog #AAA635990) is an Active Protein and is intended for research purposes only. The product is available for immediate purchase. SDS-PAGE: 45-55kD, reducing conditions. Researchers should empirically determine the suitability of the REN ren for an application not listed in the data sheet. Researchers commonly develop new applications and it is an integral, important part of the investigative research process. It is sometimes possible for the material contained within the vial of "Renin, Active Protein" to become dispersed throughout the inside of the vial, particularly around the seal of said vial, during shipment and storage. We always suggest centrifuging these vials to consolidate all of the liquid away from the lid and to the bottom of the vial prior to opening. Please be advised that certain products may require dry ice for shipping and that, if this is the case, an additional dry ice fee may also be required.
