Major thioesterase in peroxisomes. Competes with BAAT (Bile acid CoA: amino acid N-acyltransferase) for bile acid-CoA (chenodeoxycholoyl-CoA) substrate. Shows a preference for medium-length fatty acyl-CoAs. May be involved in the metabolic regulation of peroxisome proliferation
